Dear Parent or Guardian:

The Lawrence Hall of Science (LHS), in partnership with the Children’s Museum of Houston and the Miami Science Museum, is engaged in an outreach project called the Science and Math in Spanish Language Media Project. As part of the project, educational cartoons depicting a family doing math and science activities appear in the San Francisco Bay Area/San Jose, California; Houston, Texas; and Miami, Florida. The cartoons are designed to help children and parents learn about science and math outside of school, and are introduced in Spanish-language newspapers, in classes for families, and at local community festivals.

Rockman et al, a research and evaluation company, is working with LHS at the University of California to help evaluate the project’s effectiveness. Our Free Response Study will solicit responses via the project Website from children and families who are exposed to the cartoons at classes, festivals, or in the newspapers. Families will be asked for feedback on the cartoons’ appeal, the family’s engagement in the activities, and whether the readers do any additional activities after doing the cartoon activity.

Please complete a survey to share your reactions to the mathematics and science problems presented in the cartoon strip, Mateo y Cientina.

All information gathered will be kept confidential, no names or identifying information will be recorded or used in any reports. Participation in this project is completely voluntary. Should you wish to terminate your participation at any point, you may do so at any time.
